New to the lifestyle as a throuple? A beginner's guide

October 13, 2026 ยท Exchange team

Throuples have always been part of the lifestyle, but most apps were built for one person or, at best, two. Exchange was designed so three people can show up together, as themselves. Here's how to set up your profile and meet people as a throuple, whatever your mix of genders and orientations.

One profile for all three of you

On Exchange, a throuple shares one profile with details for each partner. Your profile shows its makeup at a glance, such as M/F/F, M/M/F, F/F/F or M/M/M, including non-binary partners, so people know exactly who they're talking to before the first message. You can share one login, or give each partner their own so everyone can chat and manage the profile from their own phone.

Get on the same page first

With three people, clear agreements matter even more. Before you start browsing, talk through the basics together. Who are you hoping to meet: singles, couples, other throuples? Do all three of you need to be present for a meetup, or is that flexible? How will you decide together, and what happens if one of you isn't comfortable? Writing a few of these down can head off misunderstandings later.

Make sure every voice is heard

It's easy for one partner to end up doing most of the messaging. Try to keep everyone involved, so the people you meet hear from all three of you. When you get to know someone new, check in with each other along the way. A quick "how are we all feeling?" goes a long way.

Build trust with verification

With Exchange+ or Unlimited, each partner can verify their identity, and your profile shows who in the throuple is verified. Members you've chatted with can also vouch for you. For a throuple, a fully verified profile tells people you're real and that everyone on the profile is on board.

Meeting people, at home and on the road

Browse people near you and filter by profile type, orientation, age and more. Planning a trip? Use Roam to appear in your destination before you arrive, so you can start conversations ahead of time. Events are another easy way to meet people in a relaxed, social setting.

Respect goes in every direction

The people you meet have their own boundaries, just like you. Consent should be clear, enthusiastic and ongoing, and anyone, including any one of you three, can change their mind at any time. Meet in public first, look out for each other, and if something feels off, leave. You can block and report anyone from their profile or a chat.

Three people means three perspectives, and that's a strength. Keep talking, keep checking in, and enjoy finding your people together.
